About the Department

The Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Ilesa, Ilesa, Osun State, Nigeria came into existence after Senate approval on the 10th of February, 2025 with an initial mandate to commence three programmes: Certificate in Chinese Studies, Business Executive Certificate in Chinese Studies and Diploma in Chinese Studies.

OBJECTIVES

In close adherence to the University’s mission “to be a leading institution advancing knowledge and skills through groundbreaking research and innovative teaching and to produce students capable of demonstrating relevant acumen in all facets of human endeavour” as well as vision of being “a foremost University contributing to sustainable national development and be globally relevant”, the objectives of the institute are to:

  1. Rain and produce global citizens with a deep understanding of Chinese culture and language who can thrive in diverse fields including but not limited to teaching, translation, technology and diplomacy,
  2. Inculcate, in the University and its graduates, a culture of collaboration beyond a mono-directional Western-oriented trajectory,
  3. Create and sustain an environment conducive to international engagement between China and Southwestern Nigeria in terms of Education, Technology, Agriculture, Culture and Economy

PROGRAMME

The institute offers intensive courses leading to:

  1. Certificate in Chinese Studies: This programme is designed for everyone including current students, staff and community members from all walks of life who are interested in basic knowledge of Chinese. Covering either three (3) months or six (6) months, students are equipped with HSK 1 and 2-level Chinese proficiency, based on selected duration. Entry requirements include just passion, motivation and interest while courses are taught physically at the institute mostly in late afternoons to accommodate the working class and students on regular studies.
  2. Business Executive Certificate in Chinese Studies: The programme is designed basically for members of the executive and business class whose major interest includes passion for culture and language, need for a working knowledge of Chinese due to nature of business or job, especially Diplomatic Missions and Exchange Programmes. It also offers a three (3) or six (6) months option while targeted learning outcomes include business communication, office conversations and basic everyday conversational proficiency in Chinese. Requirements are passion and motivation while classes are mostly held online and on weekends.
  3. Diploma in Chinese Studies: The Diploma Programme runs for two (2) semesters of five months (5) each, with examinations at the end of each semester. Classes are held on campus on a regular basis and requirements include five (5) o’level credit passes in any subjects including English Language.
